Gender Impact of Interregional Trade

After two decades of negotiations, the European Union (EU) and Mercosur celebrated a new Association Agreement in 2019. Structured around three pillars (political dialogue, cooperation, trade), deal is still pending ratification but has raised strong criticism. Most concerns address effect trade liberalization on social environmental agendas. This article contributes to this debate, conducting qualitative analysis agreement's potential impact gender equality EU Mercosur. Departing from feminist scholarship assumption that an unavoidable gender, argues interregional agreements can be helpful policy instrument promote equality. Nevertheless, research demonstrates that, so far, EU-Mercosur neglected opportunity. The provisional text does not reflect mainstreaming approach, lacking appropriate mechanisms manage its effects women. As result, risks widening inequality both regions.
